Since June 2026, Leon F Butler has proudly been writing the next chapter of The Cat's story. Rooted in community and driven by great hospitality, we're bringing people back to the pub they know and love.
Where it all began.
The Coachmakers Arms has stood at the heart of Wallingford since the 1700s. For centuries, travellers, traders, workers and locals have passed through its doors, seeking refreshment, conversation and a place to pause from the world outside.
While much has changed over the years, the spirit of the pub has endured. Generations have gathered here to celebrate milestones, share stories and create memories, making The Coachmakers Arms part of the fabric of the town itself.

Somewhere along the way, the pub earned a nickname, and with it came something far more important: affection. You don't earn a nickname without becoming part of people's lives.
Today, The Cat remains Wallingford’s most loved local.Whether you're joining us for a quick pint, a family meal, live music, a special celebration or simply good company, you'll find the same warm welcome that has kept people returning for generations.
Our Story
In June 2026, Leon became the custodian of The Cat's next chapter. With a deep appreciation for its history and the role it plays within the community, the vision is simple: protect what people love while creating new reasons to visit.
Our ambition isn't to reinvent The Cat. It's to ensure it continues to thrive for generations to come. A place where memories are made, friendships are formed and everyone feels welcome. Just as a great local should.
Meet Fred.
Every pub needs a character, and these days that role belongs to Fred.
While local legend Ben may have been partial to a pint of Guinness and a jar of cockles, Fred has very much made the role his own. Having officially inherited the position of The Cat's Chief Welcome Officer, Fred can usually be found greeting guests, claiming his favourite spot on the sofa or persuading unsuspecting visitors to share their bar snacks.
A firm believer that all walks should be longer, all fuss should be directed towards him and all food should be thoroughly inspected before anyone else eats it, Fred is never far from the action. Whether he'll develop Ben's taste for cockles when they return remains to be seen.
Friendly, affectionate and full of personality, Fred has quickly become part of The Cat's story. If you're lucky, you might even find him accompanying you on a stroll around Wallingford. Just be warned: once you've met Fred, he'll probably remember you long after you've finished your pint.

Yes! Our kitchen has been fully refurbished and, as we begin this new chapter at The Cat, we’re taking our time to get the food offering just right.
Monday to Thursday, you’ll find a full range of bar snacks available alongside our drinks menu.
Friday to Sunday, the kitchen fires up for freshly made-to-order toasties and pizzas… perfect with a pint.
This is just the beginning. We’ll be adding more to the menu as The Cat evolves, so keep an eye out for what’s cooking next.

Absolutely. Well-behaved dogs are welcome throughout the pub.
You'll also have the chance to meet Fred, our friendly pub dog, who is always happy to make new friends (although he is still annoyed our new pub is called The Cat).
